Today is the day that we set aside in our calendars to appreciate all that trees do for us. From providing clean air, habitat for countless birds, animals and insect pollinators, being an invaluable food source, preventing soil erosion, keeping us cool with shade in the summer and dropping the leaves to allow the sun to warm our homes in the winter and so much more, trees help improve our lives every day.
Please visit our Town Environmental Advisory Committee (EAC) web page for information on native trees and plants that support the wildlife in our area as well as a host of other helpful information.
Today the Town and Village of Ossining, along with the Ossining School District celebrated Arbor Day by planting five native trees.
One of the trees planted was dedicated as a living tribute to Reginald Lafayette. Reggie was a longtime Chairman of the Westchester County Democratic Committee Reggie and was the Democratic Commissioner of the Westchester Board of Elections. He was well known for encouraging and supporting women and minorities to run for political offices throughout the County, making sure that the legislative bodies reflected the actual demographics of the communities. His smiling face and welcoming attitude as I ran for my first office will never be forgotten.
I hope you all got a chance to see our new electric bus in action during the Green Ossining Earth Day Festival chaired by Susie Ross. A great time was had by all!

A message from Westchester County Department of Emergency Services
Fire Danger Warning Issued for Westchester County & Hudson Valley Region
The current dry conditions have increased the risk of fire in County parks and wooded areas in Westchester and the Hudson Valley region. In recent days, a number of large brush fires have occurred around the County.
Brush fires have occurred in the last few days in Saxon Woods Park in the Scarsdale/White Plains area and in Cortlandt, Greenburgh, Harrison, Lewisboro, Mount Pleasant, New Rochelle, North Castle, North Salem, Ossining and Pelham Manor.
A few safety tips for residents and visitors to follow to prevent outdoor fires:
If you observe any smoke or small fire in any park or wooded area, please call 911 immediately so it can be quickly contained.
A message from Westchester County Department of Emergency Services
Air quality levels in outdoor air are predicted to be greater than an Air Quality Index value of 100 for the pollutant of Ground Level Ozone. The Air Quality Index, or AQI, was created as an easy way to correlate levels of different pollutants to one scale. The higher the AQI value, the greater the health concern.•When pollution levels are elevated, the New York State Department of Health recommends that individuals consider limiting strenuous outdoor physical activity to reduce the risk of adverse health effects. People who may be especially sensitive to the effects of elevated levels of pollutants include the very young, and those with preexisting respiratory problems such as asthma or heart disease. Those with symptoms should visit their personal physician.
